FIELD REVIEW - WHITEWATER KAYAKING WITH THE OCEAN KAYAK VENUS

I've had my VENUS for 2 years now, and quite surprised that no reviews have materialized. A great little kayak...if you're the right size! This little craft has taken me along the east coast of Florida, from protected waters of the inter-coastal to the open Atlantic. It’s even done a little surfing around the Stuart to Jupiter stretch. Its run the Ohio River in high water, and even flood stage (around the Cincinnati area).

This past summer I ran my very first Class III WW on the Sacandaga River in upstate NY (between Saratoga Springs and Lake George). All of this speaks of the confidence I have in the kayak. It's stable, tracks extremely well in flat, long stretches, yet is nimble enough (with thigh straps) to maneuver in heavy water. Its light for transportability and is quick in the water when acceling. I manage to easily stay up with longer kayaks. In a 6 mile run this summer with over 1000 kayaks and canoes participating, I finished in the top 30.

All of this again points to the joy of paddling a craft that I have supreme confidence in. The ride is for the most part dry, but lots of scupper holes keep the cockpit area free of standing water. I use the foam Ocean Kayak backrest and seat pad combination, and it provides a comfortable ride. I have been paddling for 4 years, am 5-3, 130 lbs., and 61 years old. I am anxious to try a SINK, but until that happens, I'm very content with my VENUS, and all of its capabilities.
